Amino Acid Dairy Concentrates

Dr. Charles Schwab (University of New Hampshire) has presented data in which Lysine and Methionine in metabolizable protein has been increased. Diets were changed to increase the flow of MP-Lysine and Methionine without increasing the flows of total protein. In all cases both milk protein and milk fat were increased. It did appear that milk yield also increased, but was not measured in the trials. Milk protein increased by 0.15% and milk fat by 0.10% . Hormel's Feed Division also conducted a similar field trial and found similar results. Hormel produces porcine by-products at their Austin, Minnesota and Fremont, Nebraska plants. Not all blood meal has equal values of metabolizable protein for lysine. Commodity blood meal can have a variability range for MP lysine that fluctuates from 1.2 to 7.6% according to Dr. Normand St. Pierre at The Ohio State University. Using high lysine protein supplements such as blood meal and fish meal along with soy products in combination with a rumen protected Methionine product to obtain levels of Lysine and Methionine in MP as close to 6.6% and 2.2% as possible. Combining Hormel's Cheez-Pac Amino Acid Dairy Concentrates along with other protein commodities such as soybean meal, corn distillers, cottonseed meal and/or whole soybeans will enable the producer to get the desired levels of Lysine and Methionine in typical upper Midwest diets that include corn and/or corn silage along with hay and/or haylage. Feeds need to be analyzed and then a ration can be balanced for Lysine and Methionine.

Utilizing ration balancing for the amino acids of Lysine and Methionine usually lowers the total amount of crude protein in the diet. Most of that protein comes from the rumen degradable portion. Cheez-Pac enhances the utilization of dietary nitrogen and thus reduces the excretion of nitrogen from the urine and manure. Most importantly, Cheez-Pac should increase profits. Field trials indicate that both milk protein and milk fat will increase along with possible increase in milk yield. Balancing Lysine and Methionine may increase the cost of protein supplements purchased, but the increase in milk components should more than offset the increase. Holstein steers have a higher maintenance requirement than traditional beef-breed steers. It is to the producer's advantage to minimize the number of days dairy steers are fed. When steers are moved to confinement, rapid weight gains are the most cost effective. Digestible energy level intake determines the growth rate in most cases. While many producers self feed Holstein steers, it is recommended that steers over 1,000 pounds in body weight have access to supplemental bunk feeding to encourage increased intakes and gains.
