BASEPAC® Swine Base Mix 3000
BASEPAC Swine Base Mix 3000 is
mixed at the same use levels as Hormel BASEPAC Swine
Base Mix 2000, but is designed to take advantage of
Corn Dried Distillers Grains/Solubles. With the availability
of Corn Distillers by-products from ethanol plants increasing
rapidly, it makes economic sense to take advantage of
the these products. Energy, protein and phosphorus levels
are all at excellent levels for use in livestock diets.
The digestibility of phosphorus appears to be high.
For Swine, calcium : phosphorus ratios and lysine content
need to be monitored. BASEPAC Swine Base Mix 3000 is
designed to balance swine diets utilizing 10 to 20%
(200 to 400 pounds/ton) Corn Dried Distillers Grains/Solubles.
One real advantage is that less soybean meal, corn and
macro minerals (phosphorus) are needed in the complete
diets. The ability to reduce the total amount of ground
corn in swine diets may become a real advantage as ethanol
plants compete for more and more corn to produce ethanol.
Feed tests conducted at various universities around
the country continue to show no drop off in performance
of pigs fed up to 25% corn dried distillers grains/solubles.
There is some concern that higher levels may produce
softer fat in the carcass of pigs, but data is limited
on that at this point. It appears that at levels up
to 20% the "soft fat" issue is not a real
problem. BASEPAC Swine Base Mix 3000 also includes phytase
to help enhance phosphorus utilization even more. There
are 4,545 FTU/pound of Base Mix. Typical use levels
for BASEPAC Swine Base Mix 3000 range from 125 pounds
per ton in early grower diets to 85 pounds per ton in
late finishing diets.
A typical nutrient profile for
BASEPAC Swine Base Mix 3000 follows. The levels shown
are equivalent values as phytase alters the amount of
protein, amino acids, energy and minerals that are needed
to meet the pigs' requirements.

Sow diets will require the addition
of a sow mineral pack such as Hormel's Sow Add-Pak 50,
which includes chromium. Some producers will add a laxative
to the mix for sows prior to farrowing to 2 weeks after
farrowing. Hormel has a Sow Pysllium Pac available for
this purpose.
Hormel Feed Division representatives
can give you more complete details on utilizing this
new swine base mix. There are some real long term savings
to be gained from this new product that utilizes a new,
but plentiful corn by-product.
