Rumensin® Cleared for Use in
Lactating and Dry Dairy Cow Diets

The FDA has cleared Monensin sodium for increased milk production efficiency in lactating dairy cows. Monensin is marketed as Rumensin® by Elanco Animal Health. It can be fed to lactating and dry dairy cows at an inclusion rate of 11 to 22 grams per ton of complete feed (100% dry matter basis). Elanco is recommending that dairy producers start at the 11 gram level and work with their nutritional advisor to determine the best feeding level for their herd. Elanco is estimating a 5:1 return on investment throughout the entire lactation cycle.
Dairy producers have been allowed to feed Monensin to dairy heifers to control coccidiosis and improve weight gain and can now use it to improve milk production efficiency in dairy cows. It has been cleared in more than 20 countries for such use.
Rumensin is a registered trademark of Elanco Animal Health, Indianapolis, IN.

Porcine Meat & Bone Meal
Continues to have a Dollar
Savings Potential in Swine Diets

Porcine meat and bone meal can be a valuable addition to swine diets in terms of both performance and cost. Because of its' unique combination of nutrients it can improve amino acid profiles, increase energy levels and provide an alternative source of minerals. When included in a least cost formulation for pigs from 50 to 160 pounds, there is a potential savings of around $1.86 per ton of complete feed with current markets (1/13/05).
Those numbers were obtained using least-cost diets with a Hormel premix, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, salt, corn, dehulled soybean meal, 55% porcine meat and bone meal and lysine. Meat and bone meal was limited to a maximum of 5% of the total diet. Such a diet will reduce the amount of dehulled soybean meal, dicalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate used. Lysine and energy levels were kept the same. Porcine meat and bone meal was trading for $180 per ton pickup up at the plant (Austin, MN or Fremont, NE) on January 13, 2005 in semi-load lots.

Butler County, Iowa Youth Wins In Beef Of Merit Show
at Iowa State Fair

The Iowa State Fair has conducted the Beef of Merit Show since 1993. During that time period no one had ever won both the high quality grid market window and the high cutability categories. Matthew Johnson, a sophomore at North Butler High School, was recognized at an award ceremony at the Iowa State University Meats Lab on xxxxxxx. He is the son of Jim and Georgene Johnson of Allison, Iowa.
Johnson's Simmental cross steer took first place with the following statistics, including an average daily gain of 4.26 pounds, average choice grade on quality and a yield grade of 1.9. Most impressive, the steer gained $3.55 of retail value per day on feed.
Dennis DeWitt, co-coordinator of the show, pointed out that "This is the first steer to win both categories out of 662 entries over the show's 12 year history. Matt's success pleasantly surprised everybody." The Beef of Merit Show, held annually at the Iowa State Fair, is a competition where 4-H youth enter and show cattle live in market preferred windows, and then carcasses are evaluated immediately after the show.
Matt's prize-winning steer was fed with Hormel 32% All Natural Beef Supplement, corn and hay.
