Benefits and Features:

Hormel Porcine Blood Meal is an all pork product that is a non-prohibited material under FDA regulation 21 CFR 589.2000. It can be used for all livestock diets, including ruminant. It does have an excellent bypass protein value making it an excellent choice for dairy and/or beef formulas. Hormel Porcine Blood Meal is a good source of high quality protein that is almost black (dark) in color. Hormel Porcine Blood Meal has the plasma portion removed, meaning it includes only red cells.

Typical Use Levels:

Blood Meal can be included in complete swine diets at a rate of up to 3%. Most dairy diets would be at levels up to 0.5 pounds per cow per day. In either case they should be part of a complete, balanced diet. See your Hormel Agri-Nutrition representative for help with incorporating blood meal into diets.

Handling Characteristics:

Hormel Porcine Blood Meal is usually quite fine in particle size. It can be dusty as a result. Blending it with another product, such as meat & bone meal, which is high in fat content, can enhance the handling characteristics of both products.

Benefits and Features:

Hormel Porcine Meat & Bone Meal is an all pork product that is a non-prohibited material under FDA regulation 21 CFR 589.2000. That means it can be used for all livestock, including ruminant, diets. It also has an excellent bypass protein value making it an excellent choice for dairy and/or beef formulas. Hormel Porcine Meat & Bone Meal is a good source of protein, macro-minerals and energy (see typical analysis). It is light tan in color and very uniform in texture. Many swine producers will find that Porcine Meat & Bone Meal will formulate into least cost formulas for sows and/or grow-finish diets.

Typical Use Levels:

According to Iowa State University estimations Meat & Bone Meal can be used at up to 10% of sow gestation diets and up to 5%of lactation and grow-finish diets. It can be included in dairy cow diets up to a rate of 1.5 pounds per cow per day ( as part of a complete, balanced diet).

Handling Characteristics:

Hormel Porcine Meat & Bone Meal is high in fat content (typically 12.6%). Because of that it may tend to bridge in bulk bins (most likely to happen in cold weather). The high fat level does add energy to the overall diet and reduces dustiness of feed formulas.

Benefits and Features:

Choice White Grease can reduce dust losses during feed processing, mixing, moving, handling and feeding. At the same time it can reduce separation of ingredients, thereby maintaining more uniform feed mixtures. Choice White Grease can also extend the life of equipment by acting as a lubricant. It can reduce the need for pelleting and improve palatability. Feeding Choice White Grease can reduce body heat because it takes less energy to metabolize fat than other sources of feed energy. The absorption of Vitamins A, D, E and K are improved.

Choice White Grease can improve the health of pigs when dust may aggravate the condition. It also provides extra fatty acid nutrition. Feed efficiency can be improved. Using fat to control dust, rather than water, may help to eliminate or reduce the development of aflatoxins.

Hormel Porcine Choice White Grease is a non-prohibited material under FDA regulation 21 CFR 589.2000.

Handling Characteristics:

Choice White Grease has a melting point of 98 - 1020F. Swine and poultry diets are usually mixed at levels of 1 to 6 % of the total diet. Lactating dairy cow diets often include 0.25 to 1 pound of Choice White Grease per cow per day (as part of a balanced diet).

QUALITY CONTROL SPECIFICATIONS
AND TESTS FOR FATS

MIU = Moisture, Impurities and Unsaponifiables
Recommended moisture level is at 1% or less.
Impurities are non-hazardous filterable materials. They can create physical problems as they settle and clog equipment.
Unsaponifiables are materials within the fat that will not saponify (convert into soap).
They contribute little to the energy value of fat.
Total MIU for Choice White Grease should be less than 1%.
FFA = Free Fatty Acid
FFA is produced when fatty acids are released by hydrolysis from glycerol.
High FFA can reduce digestibility and energy value of the fat.
The maximum FFA for Choice White Grease should be 4.0%.
TITRE
Titre is the solidification point of a fat.
The minimum titre for Choice White Grease should be 360C.
IODINE VALUE
The iodine number is a measure of the chemical unsaturation of the fat.
Unsaturated fats have higher iodine numbers than saturated fats.
The iodine value for all pork fats is approximately 68.
FAC COLOR
FAC is the abbreviation for the Fat Analysis Committee of the AOCS. Fat is filtered and then compared with standard color slides.
The FAC Color for Choice White Grease is 13 - 11B.
